About flex codes
What is a flex code?
A flex code is four numbers that describe flexible working. Each number covers one part of a job: working pattern, total hours, location and schedule. Each part has a level from 1 to 4, and the higher the number, the more flexibility.
How do personal and role flex codes differ?
Your personal flex code says the minimum flexibility you need from a job. A role flex code says what flexibility a role can offer. Both use the same four parts and levels, so they can be compared side by side.
What do the four levels mean?
Level 1 means no flexibility is needed, or offered, on that part of the job. Level 4 is the most flexible, such as control over when you work or no regular on-site attendance. Levels are minimums, not preferences: any arrangement at or above each level would work.
How do I know if a job fits my flex code?
A job fits when the role offers the same level or higher on every part. Where it falls short, that isn’t a no. It shows where to start the conversation, and the site suggests a question to ask the employer.
What does a question mark in a role flex code mean?
The employer hasn’t stated that part of the role yet. Check it with them before you rule the job out.
For individuals
Do I have to say why I need flexibility?
No. Your flex code says what you need, never why. We never ask for reasons, and your code doesn’t give any away.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
About 5 minutes. It’s free and there’s no account to set up. You answer four short questions and get your personal flex code straight away.
Can I check a job that doesn’t have a role flex code?
Yes. Paste in a job advert or job description, or upload it as a PDF or Word file, and the site picks out the working arrangements. It works even if the employer has never heard of flex codes.
How do I share my flex code?
Send a link or QR code, download your profile as a PDF, or add your badge to your CV, cover letter or LinkedIn profile. You can add your name if you want to.
Is a flex code a flexible working request?
No. A flex code is not a flexible working request and is not part of any statutory process. It’s a clear place to start the conversation with an employer or your manager.
Does my flex code say anything about my skills?
No. A flex code covers working arrangements only. It says nothing about skills, experience or ability to do the job.
For employers and recruiters
How do I create a role flex code?
Answer four questions about what a role could accommodate. It takes about 5 minutes per role. If you already have a job advert or job description, upload it or paste it in and we’ll suggest the answers for you to check and confirm.
What do I get?
A role flex code, ready-made advert text, a role flexibility statement to download as a PDF, a badge and QR code for your adverts, and a note of which part of the role is most limiting who can apply.
What if we haven’t decided on part of a role?
Only state what the role can genuinely sustain. If a part isn’t decided yet, leave it open. It shows as a question mark, and candidates are asked to check it with you.
Can recruiters use flex codes for clients’ vacancies?
Yes, and it’s free. If you put a role flex code on every advert, for your own roles or your clients’ vacancies, we’ll list you as a flex codes employer or recruiter.
Privacy
Do I need an account?
No. There’s no account, no sign-up and we set no cookies.
Where does my information go?
Names, job titles, job adverts and files you add are used in your browser, on your device. They aren’t sent to us. Your personal flex code is remembered by your browser so you can come back to it. To see how the site is used, we keep anonymous counts that can’t identify you.
